How to Have a Devotional Time with God

A Simple Way to Spend Devotional Time with God Daily

Most Christians know we are supposed to have a devotional time with God each day. But what many don’t know (and may be too afraid to ask) is how we are meant to have devotional time with God.

There are many ways to spend devotional time with God, and there is no right or wrong way. The simplest way we can spend time with Jesus is through His Word (the Bible) and in prayer. It is through these two means we both hear from God and speak to God and know how to live for God.

Here are the 101 basics of how to have a devotional time with God:

1. Read from the Word of God.

Choose a passage and read it. Ask the Holy Spirit to speak to you, noting the verses that stand out to you. This is the prompting of the Holy Spirit. Highlight these verses.

2. Meditate upon the meaning.

Take what you’ve read and meditate (i.e. to chew over the text) and allow the Word to speak to you. What is God is saying to you? Write it down.

3. Take it to God in Prayer.

Thank Him for speaking to you. Pray, ask God to help you in applying His word to your life. Pray and submit yourself to God.

4. Pray Consistently.

You will have ongoing needs you need to pray about. Take them to God in prayer, asking Him to move. Keep a list of prayer needs and update them as they are answered.

5. Receive From Him.

Take time to thank God and praise Him. Worship Him with music. Allow the Holy Spirit to strengthen you spiritually. Remember He is your Father and you are His child whom He loves.

Two other things worth considering in having a quiet time or devotional time with God:

1. A Regular Time, and
2. A Regular Place

Finding consistency in your time of day and in the place in which you meet with God will greatly help you develop a life long devotion to Jesus Christ. As we make time to meet with God, the more He will work in our lives, our hearts and our love and knowledge of Him. He longs to meet with you. Why not give yourself the best chance to become the mature, equipped believer He has called you to be?
